Side Returns
Side returns have become a popular way of gaining space from an under used area of your garden. They transform a kitchen into a living area.
The design of your side-return is a massive part of the building process, so think about how you intend to use your new room, as well as the details in the final fixings. Some points you should consider are;- Will the room be an area for the family to relax in away from the main living room?
- Where will the person who is cooking be standing? Will they have their back to the room, or would an island unit with a built in hob be better for them, so they can chat to guests as they cook?
- Do you frequently entertain? Maybe you would like the drama of opening up folding sliding doors, which unite the kitchen with the garden area to make one huge space?
- 90% of the visual enjoyment of your garden will be done from the inside of your house, so think about how this view will be framed.
Many property papers and magazines nowadays feature photographs of side returns, as they have become a popular selling point. Cut ones out that you like and keep them for reference, or take photographs. We of course will help you design the extension you want, but it is a good idea to have a concept in one's mind of what the finished product should look like, as it may affect the initial building design.
